The ban on supplying plastic straws and stirrers and plastic-stemmed cotton buds came into force in England on Thursday 1st October 2020, marking yet another major step in our fight against single-use plastic waste to protect our environment and clean up our oceans.
Prior to ban coming into force it is estimated we used 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers, and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds in England every year, many of which find their way into our waterways and oceans.
It is estimated that worldwide, between 4.8 and 12.7 million tonnes of plastic enter the oceans every year, which has produced many scenes of marine wildlife being injured or killed by plastic waste.
Plastic cotton buds are among the thousands of sanitary products flushed down toilets everyday instead of being put in the bin.
Plastic cotton bud stems are generally composed of polypropylene, one of the most widely produced plastics. As a lighter plastic, it floats on or near the water surface. This combined with their size and shape means that they pass through the majority of sewage treatment works and end up in the marine environment via regular sewage outfalls.
They also enter the sea in untreated sewage through combined sewer overflows during storm events or due to blockages and are used as indicators of sewage related debris. Cotton buds largely go unnoticed because they don’t cause major blockages in the sewage systems and many pass-through screens to end up on our beaches.
In 2017 an average of 31 cotton bud sticks per 100 metres of beach, were found on UK beaches, and in 2019 just 8 per 100 metres were found on UK beaches. This reflects that many companies were already starting to move away plastic, in cotton buds, and replacing them with paper stemmed versions.
The problem with paper stemmed cotton buds is twofold, firstly the paper industry isn’t considered a pollution free industry, far from it, and secondly paper stemmed cotton buds bend very easily and consumers want an eco-friendly cotton bud, but with the strength of the plastic stemmed cotton bud.
